Negombo Dutch Fort is a historic fortification built by the Dutch during their colonial rule in the 17th century. Originally constructed to protect the lagoon and surrounding area from Portuguese and local forces, the fort stands as a testament to the island’s colonial past. Although much of the original structure has been altered or lost over time, the fort’s remnants still reveal its star-shaped design and thick ramparts. Today, the site serves as a public park and administrative area, offering visitors a chance to explore Sri Lanka’s colonial military architecture and enjoy views of the Negombo Lagoon nearby. The fort is centrally located and provides insight into the strategic importance of Negombo during European occupation.
