What Makes This Ride Special
Changing Landscapes Throughout
From open tea fields to eucalyptus forests and cascading waterfalls, the scenery is ever-changing and mesmerising.Instagram-Famous Sights
Highlights include the Nine Arch Bridge, Demodara loop, and dramatic mountain passes—stops perfect for photos, or you can just enjoy the view right from your carriage.Vintage Train Charm
These are classic blue Sri Lanka Railways trains, where doors stay open and windows slide—great for feeling the tropical breeze and the scent of tea leaves.Local Atmosphere
Chat with friendly locals, sample fresh snacks from vendors hopping aboard, and watch playful children racing the train along tracks.
Choosing Seat Class
Class Features & Experience 1st Class Air-conditioned & comfy seats, but sealed windows and no open doors—it’s more about comfort than ambiance. 2nd Class Best balance: open windows and doors, fan-cooled, reserved/unreserved. Most travellers choose this. 3rd Class Cheapest and most local, but often crowded. Limited comfort, but full of atmosphere. Tip: If you want the authentic open-air experience with a seat, go for 2nd class reserved. For the true local vibe, unreserved 2nd or 3rd class works well, but arrive early to secure a spot.
Best Seats and Timing
Depart early—mornings offer clearer skies, softer light, and fewer crowds.
From Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, sit on the right for lush tea on the mountainside; from Nuwara Eliya to Ella, switch to the left for equally stunning views.
Don’t be afraid to stand in doorways or move between cars—just hold tight when the train moves!
Things to Know
The full journey (Kandy ⇄ Ella) takes 6–7 hours. If that’s too long, break your ride: start at Nanu Oya/Nuwara Eliya to Ella (~3–4 hrs).
Carry snacks & water—onboard vendors are great but bring your own for variety and convenience.
Wear a light jacket for cooler mountain air, especially in the early morning.
Be prepared for occasional delays—Sri Lankan trains often run behind schedule.
